Green Manure - Red Clover
 |
| Red Clover |
| |
This UK native variety ‘Essex Broad’, is a fast growing perennial green manure crop that is an excellent nitrogen fixer. It’s deep roots lift nitrogen from the subsoil and penetrate the soil which improves its structure. It can be sown between April – August at a rate of 2-3g/sqm and can be left for 3-18 months. It is good at suppressing weeds as it grows bulk that smothers weeds but, to give it a good start clear the soil of all weeds.
Red Clover has medicinal properties that are used in the treatment of ‘hot flushes’ as it contains chemicals that mimic the female sex hormone – oestrogen. It also helps in the control of eczema and whooping cough. Do not try to make yourself – only buy proper propriety medicines.
Green manures are particular plants which are grown to improve the structure and/or the fertility of the soil. They break up heavy soils and improve drainage. They can help light soils hold more water. Different green manures have roots of differing depths. These can mine for different minerals in the soil, bring them to the surface and keep them there. Green manures of the Legume family increase Nitrogen in the soil which will benefit the following crop. Some, such as Alfalfa, root down very deep and bring up minerals to the top layer of the soil. The green tops, when dug in, add humus and nutrients.
